Loisel’s house is viewed to be a dungeon. Rather than being appreciative for having a place to live and a bed to sleep in, Mme. Loisel is crucial to the theme, because her presence is pleasant however, she wishes her financial status to be that of a wealthy standard. Maupassant’s use of imagery when describing Mme. Loisel, as a woman of the middle class who desires pleasures and luxuries those of which she and her husband, who is merely a clerk, simply cannot afford. Maupassant depicts the central character, Mme. Symbolism, imagery, and irony are three main literary techniques that Guy de Maupassant exemplifies in his short story, “The Necklace.” Through the demonstration in his writing, Maupassant is able to portray a theme within the story the “worth” of wealth in a materialistic society.
